“What the heck is a schizandra berry?”
Great question. Besides being one of my favorite words of all time, schizandra is is also an incredibly powerful tonic, or daily maintenance herb. I’ve personally been using it more regularly as of late and I’m pretty darn excited about the gentle cleansing and beautifying effects I’ve been noticing.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with this magical ancient fruit, this post will give you a quick rundown of why it’s such an important superfood/superherb to incorporate into your diet and will also give you two very easy and fun ways to painlessly incorporate it into your daily routine if you choose to do so. I absolutely love herbs—especially those classified as “tonic herbs,” meaning they can be taken regularly as preventative maintenance. Nature created medicinal plants for a reason. The diets of human cultures throughout history have always had an herbal or medicinal component. Unfortunately, because we’ve grown increasingly disconnected from Nature, many people now instinctively seek out pharmaceutical drugs and narcotics to fill that need, unaware that they’re actually looking for the medicinal substances that plants have always offered. I’ve been obsessed with health and nutrition for a long time. If you study these fields—or any field —long enough, you’ll eventually realize that you know nothing about everything or everything about nothing because of the massive amount of conflicting information that exists. Oddly enough, you’ll also likely realize that there are, in fact, certain habits, or principles, that are common among those who have robust health, regardless of all the other countless factors that may be at play.

When you were little, your parents or grandparents probably gave you chicken soup or some other home remedy to help you get over your cold, probably because their parents or grandparents gave it to them when they were younger.
Before taking whatever they gave you, did you first go to the library and make sure it was actually effective? Did you need to see peer-reviewed medical literature to prove it wasn’t going to have negative side-effects?
Nope. You just took it. Granted, a big reason why you did was because

Okay, “10x healthier” is just a rough estimate, but you get the idea.
I’m always looking for fun and easy ways to add a little bit of extra nutrition to whatever I’m eating.
A cool trick I thought of the other day while making oatmeal was to brew some tea in the same water that my oatmeal cooks in! I know—I’m blowing your mind right now.
This is an excellent way to add an herbal and medicinal component into your diet. Why would you want to do that? Because

Let’s get one thing straight:
You don’t need milk to be healthy or build strong bones.
Shocking, right? The commercial dairy industry has spent insane amounts of time and money to convince you otherwise, but I’m here to tell you that you CAN survive—yes, even thrive—without milk.
That said, there are some people who do very well with consuming certain milk products. If you’re going to eat dairy, do it right. The goal of this post is to help you to differentiate between healthy dairy products and harmful dairy products.

The reason I originally became interested in natural foods and holistic nutrition was to clear up my skin. I used to have terrible skin and for the longest time I had no clue that it was directly related to what I was eating. After I changed my diet and saw the dramatic improvement in my skin, I was curious what other things my diet was affecting. (The answer, it turns out, was everything).
I’ll get into the nitty gritty of my diet recommendations for clear skin in a future blog post. For right now, here are a few specific foods and herbs you can add into your diet right now that have extraordinary skin clearing properties (big shout out to Mother Nature! Woop woop!). Continue reading
I’m not here to tell you that there are “good foods” and “bad foods”. First of all, that’s a boring subject. Secondly, it’s not true. The reality is that there are “foods” and there are “food-like substances”.
The point of this post is to help you cut out food-like substances from your diet (i.e. unhealthy crap masquerading as food). These are things like refined flours, conventional dairy products, white rice, unnatural fats like margarine and hydrogenated oils plus a bunch of other weird stuff.
I’ve found that the reason a lot of people don’t get started making healthy lifestyle and diet changes is because they think that they need to remove certain things from their diet BEFORE moving forward.
This is just not true. Continue reading

Everyone loves shortcuts.

I’m sure you’re familiar with the concept of a moral compass. It’s that inner sense that tells you not to rob banks and generally helps you distinguish right from wrong. It was probably instilled in you by the people who raised you and is usually not something you ever have to consciously think about.
Stay with me, I’m going somewhere with this. Continue reading
